Ask about orientation, preceptor support, scheduling, floating expectations, and how the team handles concerns. Choose a few questions that would influence your decision, then record the answers and anything you need clarified. The prompts below help you prepare.
Ask about the start, not only the destination
Orientation is worth discussing in concrete terms. Ask how it is structured, how progress is reviewed, and who is available when you need additional support. Someone changing specialties may have different learning needs from someone returning to a familiar setting.
- What does the first month typically look like?
- How are preceptors assigned?
- How do new team members ask for help or discuss additional learning needs?
Understand an ordinary working week
Move from broad descriptions to specific routines. Ask how scheduling works, how far ahead schedules are available, and how weekend and holiday expectations are communicated. If floating or on-call work is part of the role, ask where the written expectations are explained.
It is reasonable to say, “I want to make sure I understand how this works in practice.” Asking for clarity is different from assuming the answer will be unfavorable.
Learn how the team communicates
Ask what a new team member should know about the unit’s communication and support structure. A useful question is, “When someone raises a concern, what is the usual process for addressing it?” Listen for examples that explain the process rather than relying only on words such as supportive or collaborative.
Make the last question count
Before the interview ends, ask what the next steps are and who can clarify follow-up questions. Review your notes soon afterward. Record the actual answers separately from your impressions, and mark anything you still need confirmed.
Then use the jobs and interview resources to compare what you learned with your priorities. This is preparation guidance; the best questions depend on the role, employer, and your experience.
