Prepare for a nurse salary conversation by listing your responsibilities and contributions, checking the context of pay data, and asking how compensation reviews work. Decide what you want to clarify and what follow-up to request. This guide includes an example opening, not a promise of a raise.
Build a short evidence list
Gather examples of your responsibilities, relevant learning, and work you can accurately describe. Use facts you could explain in a conversation: a role you took on, a project you contributed to, or an additional responsibility you regularly carry. Keep confidential patient and colleague details out of your notes.
Choose two or three relevant examples rather than a long list of every task. Explain what you did and why it matters to the role.
Check the context of any pay comparison
When looking at salary information, record the source, data date, location, role, and whether a figure is hourly or annual. The BLS registered nurse profile is one starting point. An occupation-wide median does not establish an individual’s appropriate rate.
Ask how the employer’s pay structure works. Some roles use established pay scales or negotiated agreements. Understanding the process helps you make a relevant request instead of assuming every part of compensation is individually negotiable.
Prepare a clear opening
“I’d like to understand how my compensation is reviewed and discuss the responsibilities I have taken on. Could we set aside time to go through that process?”
This is an example to adapt to your situation, not a script that promises a particular result.
Leave with a next step
Write down the questions you want answered: who handles the review, what evidence is useful, and when a follow-up could happen. Afterward, keep a factual record of the discussion and any agreed action. If an offer changes, ask for the updated terms in writing.
For a new role, pair this preparation with the job-offer comparison guide, so base pay, benefits, schedule, and support remain visible together.
